How this course works to help you improve your art (and why self-teaching can leave you struggling)

Self-teaching can feel scattered and frustrating. This course gives you a clear, step-by-step path, time-tested methods, and personal feedback to help you improve with confidence.

Learn with a clear, guided path

Free videos teach skills in a random order, so gaps quietly pile up. Here, every lesson builds on the last, from pencil control to line, form, and shading. You always know exactly what to practice next.

Proven Techniques to Train Your Eye

You'll learn the same methods used in traditional art academies, like the sight-size approach and Bargue drawing. These time-tested techniques refine your observation skills, helping you draw what you truly see.

Build Skills That Work Together

Most artists learn line, proportion, and shading as separate, disconnected pieces. This course links them together in the right order, so each skill strengthens the next and your drawings improve as a whole.

Supportive Feedback That Guides You

Most online courses leave you completely alone with your drawings. Here, you share your work and get personal feedback and correction from me. That means you fix mistakes early, break bad habits fast, and never stay stuck wondering what went wrong.

What students are saying

Ana Pena

I love your course. I have been doing art for over 50 years and have attended different art schools, but honestly, they never teach you these basic steps. I'm very happy to have joined you.

Graham Miller

I’ve been learning for the past two years, teaching myself with mostly YouTube tutorials. I found Emily’s course and it made me realise how many skill gaps I had. I made more progress in two months of doing this course than I did in the first couple of years trying to learn alone.

Carole Kelly

This is exactly the course I have been looking for: not just a course that teaches me the craft but explores some fundamental questions about the essence of art and its impact. I have started to compose pictures as opposed to just copying them but I believe I will be able to do that with more feeling and skill by the end of this course.

Dennis Gannon

Just like to say I have been sketching for some time now but never mastered it. What I learnt and drew in such a short time was amazing. I impressed myself. I jumped up a couple of levels in the first few modules. Thank you, Emily.

Right now you might be...

  • Struggling to get your drawings to “look right,” even when you follow tutorials
  • Unsure how to fix wonky proportions, flat shading or stiff poses
  • Jumping between random videos without a clear path or practice plan
  • Second‑guessing every line and erasing more than you draw
  • Keeping most of your drawings to yourself because you're not happy with them

In just 60 days you could be...

  • Drawing with cleaner, more confident lines
  • Understanding shading and composition so your drawings feel more realistic and intentional
  • Following a clear practice routine that shows you exactly what to work on next
  • Spotting and correcting mistakes on your own, instead of feeling stuck
  • Proudly sharing your portraits and sketches, and seeing real progress in your sketchbook

What your journey to improvement looks like on the course

Improve your line quality

I show you how to control the pencil with different pencil grips, to create polished tapered strokes. We'll practice line drawing to achieve accurate contours of eyes and side profiles. After these first modules you will be able to create smooth strokes and cleaner looking outline drawings.

Hone observation skills and improve proportions

I teach you a method to improve your observation skills, so you have the tool kit to not only draw what you see, but correct mistakes too. In the first half of the course, I will also teach you how to draw accurate proportions in faces and figures.

Draw shapes and forms

We'll use what we learned in the first half of the course to start drawing more complex forms, using the sight-size method to learn accuracy. I teach you how to block in a drawing and how to shade with beautiful light and shadow tones.

Shading

This is the most detailed module on the course; in the final lesson you'll draw this portrait with me, step-by-step. I'll teach you how to draw the proportions, shade the subtle light and shadow tones and create texture in the hair and skin.

Feedback: The missing link in your practice

I designed this course so artists can ask for feedback to see where they're going wrong. Ask for feedback in the community and you get supportive, personal feedback to help you.

The problem with learning alone

Most online drawing courses are passive. You watch a video, follow along, and hope you got it right, but no one ever checks your work.

That gap causes real problems:

  • Mistakes go unnoticed, because t's hard to pin point mistakes when you're first getting started
  • Bad habits quietly set in and become harder to unlearn
  • You second-guess every drawing, unsure if you're improving

Tutorials alone can show you what to do. They can't tell you how you're doing.

How personal feedback changes everything

Inside this course, you can share your work and ask for personal feedback from me.

Here's why that makes the difference:

  • See your blind spots. I help you spot the errors you can't catch on your own
  • Correct mistakes early. Fix issues before they develop into habits
  • Know you're on track. Draw with confidence instead of guessing
  • Improve faster. Clear, targeted guidance means less time stuck and more visible progress

Feedback turns practice into real, measurable improvement, so you actually build skill, not just a library of watched videos.

What students are saying

Barry Wolff

I suppose I didn't pay attention to the urge to take art a bit more seriously. Hence here I am now, retired, 79, and looking at my art. All I would say to anyone "it's never too late, but you will regret it if you don't start now!! There is so much to explore, and the journey can be so gratifying. Just do it!

Gwen Mitchell

My husband gifted me with this drawing course; I decided to take my time and enjoy it. Fundamentals are so important, my favorite was Lighting and Shadow, I was weak in this area until going through this course. The more I learned, the more clearly, I began to see things about drawings techniques (proportion, perspective, forms & shapes, composition and line quality). The in-depth instruction, illustrations and videos were helpful as I went through the many drawing tasks. I know my art skills have improved. Thank you to Emily, you are a talented tutor, and I appreciate all the hard work you put into this course.

Susan Carlson

I started my art journey very late. After a brief introduction to media course earlier this year & an introduction to watercolour more recently, I realised I had to address issues around line, angle etc… in other words, drawing. I’d already downloaded Emily’s free drawing book & done some basics & some sketching, but knew I had to commit more strongly. As an autistic & ADHD person, I can sometimes pay a great deal of attention to detail, but can also become noted quite quickly. This course allows me to come and go, skip bits… and then return when I realise that I have to do the work! I’ve just finished the first unit and am noticing the difference. I’m thrilled with my latest charcoal drawing.
